Welcome to Destinations India. India is the land of History, Culture, Architecture and biodiversity. Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Indian cultural history is more than 4,500 years old. During the Vedic period, the foundations of Hindu philosophy, mythology, and literature were laid, and many beliefs and practices such as dharma, karma, yoga, and moksha, were established. Indian Mughal Architecture is world renowned. The Taj Mahal, built in Agra between 1631 and 1648 by Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, has been described in the UNESCO World Heritage List as “the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage”. India contains three biodiversity hotspots. One of 17 megadiverse countries, it hosts 8.6% of all mammalian, 13.7% of all avian, 7.9% of all reptilian, 6.0% of all amphibian, 12.2% of all piscine, and 6.0% of all flowering plant species. India hosts more than five hundred wildlife sanctuaries and thirteen biosphere reserves, four of which are part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
