Kargil Market 2

Kashmir – Ladakh Trip Day 14 (Kargil Market)

Started at 8:30am from Leh and reached Kargil at 4:00pm. Kargil is the second largest town in Ladakh after Leh. Kargil has an average elevation of 2,676 metres (8,780 feet), and is situated along the banks of the Suru River (Indus). The town of Kargil is located 205 km (127 mi) from Srinagar, facing the Northern Areas across the LOC. Like other areas in the Himalayas, Kargil has a temperate climate. Summers are hot with cool nights, while winters are long and chilly with temperatures often dropping to −48 °C (−54 °F). The Kargil Bazaar, located within the heart of Kargil town pulsates with life and activity even today. Historically, the bazaar evolved as a significant trading centre along the important silk trade route where travellers and traders would stop to rest, buy and sell. Portions of the bazaar, even today, retain the old world charm and reflect the rich Central-Asian influence in its architectural character. The part of the market known as Balti Bazaar is representative of the unique mud and wood architectural style associated with Ladakh, Western Himalayas and Karakoram. Among other commodities, precious stones, Ladakhi artifacts, spices and condiments are sold here even today. We went to J&K tourism bungalow, its a steal at Rs. 300/- per night but unfortunately was fully booked. We then went to Paradise Guesthouse, but it was also fully booked. Then, finally got a room at Scorn Guesthouse for Rs. 500/- per night, basic clean room. Shared Taxi Stand Kargil – 01985232079.
