Places of Interest around Alibaug:
Kolaba Fort – It is situated in the sea at a distance of 1–2 km from the Alibag shores. This was built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1680 and is assumed to be the last one that he built before his death. The fort used to have a sweet water well. The length of the fort is 900 ft, width is 350 ft, and height is 25 ft. Kulaba Fort is an old military fortification in India. It has two gates: one shoreside and the other seaside. An interesting feature of this fort is that it was a freshwater well inside, even though it is a seaside fort. In the autumn, it can be reached by wading through waist-deep water at low tide, however, at high tide, boats must be used to reach it. The are two big doors at front and backside for entering the fort. The eastern door is known as Mahadarwaja (door), and the southern door is known as Darya/Yashwant/Dhakata darwaja. There is a popular Ganesh Temple (Mandir) inside the fort.
The two cannons present in the fort are in good condition.
Magnetic Observatory – Established in 1904 by the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism. A written permission from the Panvel office of Indian Institute of Geomagnetism needs to be presented when entering the premises of the Observatory in Alibyag.
Varsoli beach – It is located on the outskirts of Alibaug. Though Varsoli beach serves as a naval base, tourists can enjoy the white sand and clean water. Moreover, the beach is dotted with numerous coconut and casuarina trees.
Mandawa Port/beach – The beach is approximately 19 Km from Alibag S.T. is known as “Picnic Point”. On Alibag-Rewas road get down at Mandawa phata. Many popular Hindi Cinemas shots have been shot on the beach. The catamaran/ferry services are available from Mumbai to the Mandawa. The place is famous for many Bollywood celebrities bungalows.
Khanderi Fort – Khanderi is a fortified island 20 km off the coast of Mumbai. This was built by Shivaji in 1660 CE to keep a check on the Siddis at Murud-Janjira fort. However later on it lost its importance. Most of the fort is still intact the most prominent structure is a lighthouse built in 1837. It can only be accessed with the permission of the Mumbai Port Trust.
Underi Fort – Underi (also called Jaidurg) is a fortified island near the mouth of Mumbai harbour south of Prong’s Lighthouse. It is a companion fort to Khanderi and currently lies in Raigad district, Maharashtra. These islands of Khanderi and Underi served as one of the landmarks for ships entering Mumbai harbour.Underi is smaller than Khanderi. The fortification was built by Kahim of the Siddisin 1680 CE.
How to reach Khanderi and Underi forts by public transport:
Thal is connected by direct ST buses from Mumbai. Another route from Mumbai is get launch from Gateway of India and reach Mandva and get down at Thal by the bus going to Alibaug. For coming from Pune and Kolhapur it is better to reach Alibaug and go to Thal by the bus. While coming from Southern Konkan and Goa reach Pen by ST, Private buses or train and then take bus which goes to Thal or go there via Alibaug.
