Namaste Yoga Farm Gokarna

Welcome to Namaste Yoga Farm Gokarna

Namaste Yoga Farm

Eco-tourism is more than a catch phrase for nature loving travel and recreation. Eco-tourism is consecrated for preserving and sustaining the diversity of the world’s natural and cultural environments. It accommodates and entertains visitors in a way that is minimally intrusive or destructive to the environment and sustains & supports the native cultures in the locations it is operating in. This is the reason Namaste Yoga Farm Gokarna uses thick vulcanic, laterite stones for the walls and the roof is made from terracotta tiles on coconut wood rafters.

Eco-tourism also endeavours to encourage and support the diversity of local economies for which the tourism-related income is important. With support from tourists, local services and producers can compete with larger, foreign companies and local families can support themselves. Each year our first yoga retreat at Namaste Yoga Farm Gokarna is donated to local charities. We give work to about 7 local persons and each of them gets paid over average. Included into their salary is yearly dentist and medical check-up.

Saving the environment around you and preserving the natural luxuries and forest life, that’s what eco-tourism is all about. Whether it’s about a nature camp or organizing trekking trips towards the unspoilt and inaccessible regions, one should always keep in mind not to create any mishap or disturbance in the life cycle of nature. Eco-tourism focuses on local cultures, wilderness adventures, volunteering, personal growth and learning new ways to live on our vulnerable planet. It is typically defined as travel to destinations where the flora, fauna, and cultural heritage are the primary attractions. Responsible Eco-tourism includes programs that minimize the adverse effects of traditional tourism on the natural environment, and enhance the cultural integrity of local people. Therefore, in addition to evaluating environmental and cultural factors, initiatives by hospitality providers to promote recycling, energy efficiency, water reuse, and the creation of economic opportunities for local communities are an integral part of Eco-tourism. Since 2 years we have been providing free drinking water for guests out of 20 liter jars to make sure nobody has to buy and bring 1 liter bottles into the property to keep plastic to a minimum. We also do not burn our garbage but bring it weekly to the local garbage place.

This room is between the office and the kitchen. Priced the same then the bamboo huts, because there might be some noise after 7 am coming from the kitchen though i keep the noise to a minimum. So in case you have issues with early morning disturbance then do not rent this accommodation.

Tree Houses:

The Big Tree House with Ocean View
The big tree house is very basic on 5 plywood boards (160 square feet). The sitting area is perfect for bird watchers and animal lovers alike, but what strikes you most is the stunning vista – looking out towards the Arabic ocean and Kudle beach. You have a light, electric plug ins, wifi (wlan) connection, mattress and a mosquito net. There is a wooden ladder going up and monkeys jump in the tree (monkey’s are super friendly). The roof and low side walls are made from coconut leaves and bamboo. Breakfast and yoga is included for 2 persons.

Once you decide to live with us in a tree house then on your arrival you have to sign that it is at your own risk living up in the tree. Shape and size of the tree house vary cause they get rebuild every year because of the monsoon. For safety reasons only you and your partner are allowed up in the tree house. No candles are allowed.

A tree house, a free house,
A secret you and me house,
A high up in the leafy branches
Cozy as can be house.

A street house, a neat house,
Be sure and wipe your feet house
Is not my kind of house at all-
Let’s go live in a tree house.

Read below about the relationship between yoga and chess:
The strategic game of chess and the meditative practice of yoga may not appear to have much in common, but a new essay on Chess Life Online, the United States Chess Federation’s online magazine, begs to differ. This is my opinion, as a regular chess player, as well as a yoga teacher and the chess father of an accomplished teenage chess player.

My 10-year-old daughter, Isabella Luna, is a serious chess player with one scholastic title under her belt”. “The connection between yoga and chess is just something that has always tickled the edge of my mind.” I have to add that i have been able to relate to Isabella’s deep love of chess because i feel the same way about yoga. “They seem to ignite similar delights in us.

In my research, i learned that the two actually have more in common than one would think. For example, the word “chaturanga,” which comes from the Sanskrit chatur (four) and anga (limbs), was also the name of an earlier version of chess, which was based upon the four divisions of a Vedic army: elephants, chariots, horse cavalry, and foot soldiers. In my essay, i also compares yoga to chess, as both are generally solitary practices that help you learn focus, deep inner listening, and non-attachment.

Yoga, can also serve tournament chess players in numerous ways. For example yoga postures for relief from sitting at a chess board for long periods of time (Ardha Matseyendrasana will relieve players’ low-back tightness), balance postures to help build concentration, and Savasana to relieve post-tournament stress.

Chess and yoga have lasted through the centuries for one very good reason: They answer a deep-seated call in us, firing up our synapses in a way that goes far beyond data collection and scientific studies”. “Even though yoga doesn’t speak to Isabella the way it does to me, her enjoyment of chess shines through her the way my passion for yoga radiates within me. It’s the same love taking different forms.

Kayaking:
This year we got 2 double and 2 single kayaks. With our jeep we drove inlands to a river around 10 am on Saturdays and paddled along beautiful fisher villages until we reached a lonely beach on the other side of paradise beach. Here we camped in our brand-new 2 man tents on a campfire spending the night. The next morning we crused over to Paradise beach for breakfast and around noon we paddled along the coast back to Om beach.

Price is 100 Euros. Please register early cause only 5 seats are available. Included is the transfer, a snack for afternoon, dinner at the camp fire, drinking water and as much paddling as u can do until Sunday 1 pm.

Our first kayak tour we did almost at the end of the season 2009/10, but there are much more to come next season 2012/13. We went with the jeep to Kumta and went under the bridge into the water floating out with a huge river. Overnight we camped on an island until sunrise and paddled down the river with the local fisherman reaching Paradise beach. From there it was only another hour coming over to Om beach.

Breakfast: Season 2013-2014 we will not only serve a sweet (müsli, fruit, joghurt, soymilk, milk, nuts, toast with marmelade, honey) or salty ( eggs different style, brown bread or toast, cheese, olive oil, balsamico, breakfast, tofu, tahini, tomato, cucumber) breakfast, but also additional 7 different specialls during the week like pancakes, banana bread with nutella, idly, paronta, dosa (local breakfast), porridge or nutella toast. Since breakfast starts 8 am and yoga classes also we want to offer for those yogis a tea or coffee at 7:30 am.

Babysitting: A babysitting service is available at Namaste Yoga Farm. We recommend that arrangements are made in advance to avoid disappointment. The concierge desk at the Hotel will be able to assist in arranging the babysitting service with our chosen babysitting agency.

Plans for the future: Some projects are in my mind and not sure if i can realize them for the next season 2013/14. One of them is a small swimming pool 6 meters by 4 meters in the center of the property and the other is a new space on top of the new building with awesome views over the ocean, the beach and the back lands. Planned is a toe to ceiling glassfront on two sides, a place to hold meetings or workshops.

About Gokarna:

It is about 200km north of Mangalore (7 hr by bus) and 56km southwest of Karwar on the seashore. Gokarna is a pilgrim town, one of the most important in South India, and though foreigners are no longer allowed into any of the main temples, you’ll see signs of religion everywhere, from bathing Brahmins in the sea or the large temple tank to the many groups of shaved-head men with caste marks and chotis (pony tail shaped tufts of hair) who walk barefoot around town clad in white robes that make them look like slim, fit sumo wrestlers. The atmosphere is hard to define, foreign tourism jarring with the more traditional, devout feel of the place. There are plenty of smiles from shop owners, but I sense an undercurrent of hostility from the pilgrims and upper-caste villagers, which makes me feel like an interloper.

Dawn in Gokarna. Behind high walls, male voices intone religious verse, a lone old woman sweeps dust around the main road while a cow plods lazily alongside, and a small fire burns inside an open fronted cafe. According to the Gokarna Purana, “By mere entrance into this Ksetra (holy place), one becomes liberated from hundreds of sins, including even brahma-hatya (the killing of a Brahmin).” Moreover, it is said that one becomes free from rebirth by just looking at the Atma-linga, by hearing the roar of the sea, or by taking birth in Koti-tirtha

A good time to visit is during one of the big religious festivals, such as Maha Shivaratri in February or March, when 20,000 pilgrims converge and huge temple chariots are wheeled around the village streets.

All roads lead to Car Street in the centre of the village. Linking Venkataraman and Ganapti temples, it’s lined with quaint wooden houses and stalls selling devotional items to the pilgrims, cheap clothes, CDs, and beach toys to the foreigners. Main Street forms a T at the top end, a left turn takes you up to the bus station, and a right leads down to the tank. The streets are narrower at the opposite side, a labyrinth of alleys passing Mahabaleshwara Temple and its phallic image of Shiva in the direction of the sea.

At the end of it all is the village beach, long, featureless, and virtually deserted a couple of hundred metres past the huddle of chai and snack stands at the entrance and the fishing boats further north. It’s not a patch on the sand at Kudle or Om and the water is too dirty and the waves too strong for swimming, even the pilgrims-only paddle, but it’s a nice enough place to watch the sun as it dips down into the Arabian Sea.

Gokarna’s glorious beaches are one of the reason to visit, with prices and visitor numbers both lower than up the coast in Palolem. There are four beaches south of the scruffy area of sand in the village, Kudle, Om, Half Moon, and Paradise, each more isolated than the last, at least until the first guests begin to arrive at the luxury Om Beach Resort. High season on the beaches is during December and January, though the few accommodation options are busy from October til March.

Four of the most beautiful beaches in India are located south of Gokarna, surrounded by jungleThe first beach is called Kudle Beach and it is about a twenty-minute walk from Gokarna. The path goes uphill and then drops down to Kudle Beach, a beautiful, kilometre-long white sand beach surrounded by palm trees. At this beach there are simple huts and beachside eating places. You need to bring your own bedding. There is fresh water here.

The next beach is Om Beach thirty-minutes further south. The beach got its name because it is shaped like the auspicious Om sign. There are some really basic huts and some chai shops to eat at. Many Indian pilgrims visit OM Beach on Sundays by bus and holidays to see the sites. Best to come here on the weekdays

There are two more beaches—Half-moon and Paradise—each a twenty-minute walk from one another. You can get bottled water and food on all the beaches near Gokarna including the Main beach, Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise beaches.

Note: Om and Kudle beaches are easily reached on foot via a coastal path that you can join either behind Ganapti Temple or, closer to the beach, next to the small cliff top temple at the end of the road running parallel to the coast between Mahalaxmi and Prema restaurants. Auto rickshaw drivers charge 150 rupees to Om Beach and to Kudle 60 rupees. (Since November 2009 there is a new road only for rickshaws and bikes going to Kudle beach for 50 rupees)

Mahabaleswara Temple

This Shiva temple is said to be next in sanctity only to the Vishwanath Shiva Temple in Varanasi. It is often called the Kashi of the South. Hindus come here to perform the death rites for departed ancestors.

Tradition states that Lord Rudra (another name for Shiva) was sent to Patalaloka by Brahma to undergo penance. He eventually returned through the ear of Mother Earth and blessed her with the name of Gokarna (Go = “cow”; karna = “ear”). Thus this place served Rudra as a womb. It is also known as Rudra Yoni and Adi Gokarna. As time passed, Rudra collected the essence (sakti) of all Brahma’s creations as well as his own essence and created a golden deer with four legs, three eyes, and three horns. Eventually, the three horns (representing the three guna-avataras) were placed at Pushkar (Brahma), Shaligram (Vishnu), and Gokarna (Shiva). These places are known as Siddhi Ksetras. Ravana desired to possess Shiva’s powerful horn-linga, also known as Prana-linga or Atma-linga, so he performed penance and received the linga in a box at Mount Kailash. Ravana then returned south with the linga on the condition that wherever he placed it, it would become permanently rooted. At the demigods’ request, Lord Vishnu contrived a means to trick Ravana through Ganesh, disguised as a brahmacari. Eventually the Atma-linga was placed at Gokarna, rooted all the way through to Sapta Patala, and became known as Mahaballeswara (maha—great and bal—strength).

The Shri Maha Ganapati Temple is dedicated to elephant-headed Ganesh. Koti-tirtha Kund is said to have been created by Garuda. There is a Krishna Temple here which is said to be where the Lord went to perform penance after killing Banasura. There is also a temple dedicated to Sri Venkateswara (Balaji).

Ram-tirtha, is said to be where Rama, Sita, and Laksman visited after leaving Lanka. Lord Rama and his brother Bharata are said to have performed penance here. There is a beautiful temple on the hill overlooking the sea at this place.

A major festival is held here during the birthday of Shiva (Shiva-ratri) in February. During this festival, a deity of Lord Siva is placed on the huge temple Ratha (chariot) at the end of the bazaar near the Maha Ganapati Temple.

Sightseeing:

Murdeshwar the big Shiva statue about 75 kms, Shiva cave on top of the hill or Yana waterfalls about 45 kms and Jog falls 170 kms.

Mahabaleswara Temple is the prime attraction of this “Kashi of the South”. Sited on Chariot-Car Street, 1 km north-west of the bus stand, this temple is a delight to observe.
